Bridging the law enforcement gap in South Sudan

On November 18, 2021, PAX organized a seminar in Juba to bring local SSNPS police commissioners, UN Police, UNDP, diplomats and civil society together to discuss the perceived law enforcement gap: the gap between expectations by communities on protection and law enforcement, and the actual capabilities the police has at its disposal in providing this protection.

During the meeting, it turned out that there is not only a gap between local community expectations and police capabilities, but also an additional gap between what local police commissioners need to better protect civilians and the rule of law effectively, and the opportunities national and international actors are currently able to provide in terms of Security Sector Development/Reform. Participants concluded that national authorities should be engaged more and play their part in supporting their police with the necessary basic infrastructure and training.
A summary report of this seminar is available here.
